Abstract:

In 1871, three letters written on yellow rice paper arrived in Paris. Addressed to a French Catholic missionary, the letters were from three Chinese Catholic women from a small village in Northeast China. Thirty years later, Alfred Marie Caubrière (1876–1948) arrived in the same village and experienced the extraordinary political and social changes of the region from 1899 to 1948. Seen through the lens of Chinese Catholic women and Caubrière’s incredible accounts, Li's new book opens a unique window into the social turmoil between the peoples of Northeast China and international actors during the first half of the 20th century, a transformative era that led to the creation of modern China. The book is recently awarded IBMR Top Ten Books of 2023.
