Abstract: This talk examines the case of Colombia as a reference point for missed opportunities in the battle against organised criminal groups, high impact violence and money laundering in Europe. It will highlight important lessons to be acquired from Colombia, especially when approaching issues of European security. So far, Europe’s response to this challenge has been largely ineffectual. This situation has emboldened transnational criminal groups whose significance, reach and violence pose a complex security risk. One item that stands out is a pervasive lack of learning and adaptation in Europe from experiences of countries in the Global South.
