Politics of Migration and Empire in Interwar Japan: Nihon Rikkōkai (Japanese Striving Society) and M

Speaker: Dr. Noriaki Hoshino (Hong Kong Baptist University)

Date and time: December 1, 2022 (Thusday), 4:15 pm – 5:15 pm

Venue: CPD-3.01, Centennial Campus, HKU

This talk explores an intersection between the histories of transnational/pacific Japanese migration and Japanese imperial formation in interwar Japan. Nihon Rikkōkai is the leading private organization in modern Japan supporting Japanese transpacific migration and migration to its colonies. The talk focuses on the discourse of Nagata Shigeshi, the second leader of this organization. In the discussion, Dr. Hoshino reveals not only the contributing role of migration to ongoing Japanese imperial formation but also the subversive elements of migration—particularly the illegal migration encouraged by the organization.
