This paper examines text and context of Peter Lilienthal’s La Victoria (1973) and Raúl Ruíz’s Palomita Blanca (1973/1992), two features that reflect the adventurous spirit, thematic scope and politically committed nature of New Chilean cinema. Made in the last year of the Unidad Popular government, the films capture Chile, under the leadership of its socialist president, Salvador Allende, in an increasingly unsettled political and social situation. The German director, Lilienthal, and the young Chilean auteur, Ruiz, formed part of a close-knit group of filmmakers whose work shared thematic concerns and formal elements. Eager to support the Chilean reform program, La Victoria deals with a young woman from the provinces who came to Santiago for work and campaigns for one of the socialist candidates. Celebrating Chilean youth culture, Palomita Blanca is a satirical take on the romance between a girl from a modest family to a young man from the upper echelons of Chilean society. Revolutionary cinema and socialist critique alike, the films convey the affective and vibrant atmosphere of the Allende years whilst highlighting the deep social divides and patriarchal undercurrents of Chilean society that contributed to the demise of the socialist government.

Claudia Sandberg is an Honorary Fellow in the School of Languages and Linguistics at the University of Melbourne, where she teaches film. Her research focuses on the intersections of European and Latin America cinemas, with a special interest in the Cold War era.
