Assembling Solidarity: Proletarian Arts and Internationalism in East Asia
Speaker: Dr. Edwin Michielsen (University of Toronto)
Date and time: December 7, 2021 (Tuesday), 9:30 am – 10:30 am (HK time)
Dr. Michielsen will discuss his doctoral research that examines the theories and practices of proletarian international solidarity during the 1920s and 1930s in East Asia. Following a discussion of proletarian international solidarity in East Asia, he will examine the artificial language Esperanto utilized by proletarian writers to assemble a linguistic solidarity among “striking tongues,” as playwright Akita Ujaku described it, against imperial languages and lingual hierarchies. He will highlight how proletarian Esperantists exploited a variety of practices, such as translation and radiobroadcasting, to explore the possibilities and limits of Esperanto as a proletarian language.
